A friend of mine is always popping ibuprofen after a workout - i'm sure it's not a good idea - any thoughts on that?

    Hi:

You might want to tell him that Ibuprofen has been shown to stop protein synthesis - that's the process that's essential for muscle growth -  so when he pops his ibupro, he's essentially wasted his whole workout!

Wow, i'd never heard that.  I'll tell my boyfriend.

Really - wow would like to read that one.

I assume that ibuprofen reduces swelling and therefore could help after a workout?

That is a real eye opener, isn't it?

    Hi:

    Here's the reference:

Medicine and Science in Sports & Exercise, vol 35, no 6, pp892-896, 2003.

Their final conclusion was that NSAIDs are ineffective in treating muscle soreness and inflamation, and impair protein synthesis in humans after eccentric exercise.
