A friend just sent me an article about how eating more protein helps you to lose weight - is that the same thing as Atkins?  Atkins sounded dodgy.

    Hi:

I think you're right - the Atkins diet is a bit dodgy, though certainly effective for many people.

The high protein diet is something altogether different, and is a viable long-term solution for many people who struggle with their weight.

It simply involves reducing your carb intake and increasing your protein intake.  If you retain the 'quality' carbs in your diet (fresh fruit and veg) and remove some of the processed ones (bread, pasta, white rice, plus potatoes) wiht low fat protein (fish, chicken, beans), the body responds by releasing fat.

Of course you need to exercise regualrly too to see real results, but it's a good, healthy prescription, and not too hard for most people to figure out.

I like this approach - I use it especially when i'm busy, a protein shake is easy to take with you, that and some fruit can make a good meal on the go and help you avoid all the bad choices that are out there when you're away from home and in a hurry.

Sounds like a good idea - might give that a go when I'm on the run and can't get a proper meal - it has to be better than Little Chef or McDs!!!

I have several gym buddies who swear by this approach - they certainly look good on it!

This might have to be my new year resolution - it sounds pretty doable - not too extreme.
