The south beach diet is very similar to the atkins diet in many ways, it promotes the consumption of red meat and other protien rich products and limits almost all carb and starch based food such as rice, bread, root vegtables etc...

In my opinion this is a great diet if you are a glutton and cannot resist stuffing your face, but for the more level headed of us take some tips from here. Just limit the portion size of the food groups this diet allows and limit the carb and root veg intake to a very small portion per day, for example a small jacket potato for lunch as you carbs for the day.

Most of the weight loss from the south beach diet will be water, then slow fat loss thereafter, but don't be fooled...if you return to a normal diet so will the weight..!!

So how does this vary from the Atkins Diet then? There's so much hype around now about various diets, it is overload. isn't the best, and easiest way to diet just to consume less calories than you use each day.. be sensible with your food and portion control, and do a little exercise every day. Why do people need some novelty fad to help them lose weight?

i think the word diet is a such a flaky word, i think eating in moderation is vital and something which you can stick too.

diet is misplaced as the emphasis is on losing weight, i think more empahsis should be on maintaining weight...

But that would depend on what you weighed to start with.  If you weighed 20st you wouldn't want to just maintain, would you?

It sounds a lot like using GI?  At least to me it does...

My friend lost over a stone using the SB diet, but i'm concerned it's not very healthy - anyone have any thoughts?

SBD was developed and designed to balance how the body uses insulin.  If you could imagine a 'homeopathic' type of therapy to how the body manages insulin this would be SBD.  A secondary result is simply an awareness of how many differnent types of sugar one is consuming and to learn how to manage the consumption of those in view of insulin production.

It's scary how much sugar is in our modern diets in one form or another isn't it?

it seems to be one of the better diets, making you think about eating properly and avoiding a lot of processed junk.

I was thinking of giving this a go - still carrying the pounds from baby no. 2!  anyone tried it?  Results?

I'm a little nervous to try this one cause Jennifer Aniston got so crazy skinny on it that she looked like you could snap her in two!  People always seem to not know when to stop with these diets - does anyone know how to change the diet when you've reached your target weight so you can maintain it, and not gain more, but also not keep losing?
  • Re: south beach diet - explained

Most diets (this one included) have a maintenance program as part of the plan.
