Welcome to the forums Billy62 - there are a lot of things that may affect you're getting started :
i. Are you as fit as Lance Armstrong and do road racing and time-trialling ;) - if not, how fit are you as a starting point e.g. no exercise, twice a week, never touch a bike or go out for cycling 2 or 3 times a week?
ii. What do you want to achieve? Is it general fitness, toning, inproved stamina or all the above?
iii. Do you want to progress on to road cycling? How much time can you dedicate to riding the bike and developing your fitness?
So as you can see there's a lot to think about. Eyeryone on these forums has at some point been in the same situation, so I am sure you will get lots of great advice about ideas and ways to get started to keep at it!
