I think you're right - the Atkins diet is a bit dodgy, though certainly effective for many people.
The high protein diet is something altogether different, and is a viable long-term solution for many people who struggle with their weight.
It simply involves reducing your carb intake and increasing your protein intake. If you retain the 'quality' carbs in your diet (fresh fruit and veg) and remove some of the processed ones (bread, pasta, white rice, plus potatoes) wiht low fat protein (fish, chicken, beans), the body responds by releasing fat.
Of course you need to exercise regualrly too to see real results, but it's a good, healthy prescription, and not too hard for most people to figure out.
