Free weights use so many more peripheral muscles they give you a better workout - however, when you're just starting out machines are a good way to get into it. why don't you get a trainer to show you some free weight exercises?

For general fitness it doesn't make a huge difference, but it certainly will make your workouts more interesting, offering you many more options for working each body part. If you're in fitness for the long haul it's therefore worth taking the time to learn how to use free weights.
I think the other replies are being too diplomatic - free weights are a much better workout - not only more options, but a more natural way for your muslces to move (not locked in place by the machine), greater variability of weight lifted, more peripheral muscles used, etc, etc. All in all a far more satisfying workout.
Take the time to get a trainer to teach you properly and you'll not regret it.

it’s difficult to compare the benefits from free weights compared to these really few that you get from using machines.
(I’m not trying to be patronising here, but) I actually really feel sorry for all people that religiously stick to machines based workout instead of tree weights and body weight routines.
Especially for these that spend countless hours on the treadmills hoping to “burn fat”, slim down, “get toned” or what’s even funnier get ready for some road running.
Treadmills are preparing you (only) for being a good tube commuter and improve your ability of balancing on escalators in London underground little more.
You are all human machines with more than 600 muscles in your body, designed to do mechanical work, walk, run, squat, lunge, pull and press and NOT make all these machine manufactures rich.
I have NOT seen ANYBODY who really got fit walking on the X-trainer, treadmill or got rid of cellulite doing sissy movements on inner/outer thigh machine. at the same time, I have seen a lot of good looking birds on the athletic tracks looking £$1,000,000!!
Conclusion - you MUST exercise with free weights and forget about most machines
